My dear Calder-Marshall,
Thank you very much for your letter of October 5th. All the
essential facts regarding the position of the Fund for the Relief of
Distress in China have already been communicated to you and I am now
writing to give you the story as a whole.
First, I will take the telegrams already despatched to you in
their order.
On September 9th in reply to your telegram of the 28th August
asking us to see if we could raise a fund preferably under the
auspices of the Lord Mayor, me telegraphed;
"YOUR TELEGRAM 28TH AUGUST JAYOR DECLINGS OTHER POSSIBILITIJS
DOUBTFUL AIRMAIL TOLLOFIAG".
On September 23rd we cabled you as follows:
*CHINA ASSOCIATION Phurðda LAVAGRING PUBLIC APPEAL "ELIEF
DISTRESE CHINA CABLE CONCRETELY AS POSSIBLE WHAT BAISG DONE LOCALLY INJURS TIGNISIN MAQUSSTING THEI CARLS SIBILARLY”.
The Minutes of the meeting at which this decision was taken were
sent to you on Jetobar 1st. Ün October 2nd we telegraphed to you:
"RANG NIJU KŒU MRS JUL MARY AFETAL FOR FAILS DISTRÆDE CHIBA PROCEED
FORTHWITH CONSTITUTE ORGANIZALIUM COPRASPONDING IN BRGADTH AND IVINGIZLA WITH OUR STOP CABLA SCOMMET POSSIBLE STEPS TAKEN".
Then, on October 5th in reply to your cable of the same day
stating that from heuters Summary it appeared that relief ms to be
given to whinese only, we cabled:
'REDISKO SUMMARY APPARENTLY UI. TAD PULLOVING SONS RESULICJ10
BEI ILA HOLPITALS BROAKING KOA WHILE ARS ALBO BRITIEH SUBJ „CTS URGENT NEED OF HILP UTOP 1501 YILO ONGANIZATION COOPSKATE
CONSUL-G 48ORAL”.
Ün Votober 7th we cabled to the Chamber of Commerce at longkong:
*RAFERNING REVI¿ho SUMMAHY QUE AFZAL HILI JISTR:53 CHINA
PCHLIMIA HER# UCTOS R 2 PROCUED IN COOP BATING HA UNMI CREATE LOCAL ORGANIZATION GUNSULT HONGKONG GOVAĦNAENT".
I had arranged with the Foreign Office in respect of our cable to
you of the 5th and with the Colonial Office in respect of the above
cable that a communication would be telegraphed to the British
Authorities at changnai and do nɛzung • This was done.
